Brief Bio
Arturo de la Escalera, PhD, graduated from Universidad Politecnica de Madrid (Madrid, Spain) in Automation and Electronics Engineering in 1989, where he also obtained his Ph.D. degree in Robotics in 1995. In 1993, he joined the Department of Systems Engineering and Automation at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (Madrid, Spain), where he became an Associate Professor in 1997 and Full Professor in 2018. His main research line is Robotics, emphasising the application of Computer Vision for road environment perception and real-time object recognition. He was the Coordinator of the Computer Vision Section within the Comité Español de Automática (2016-2020).
He has kept in mind the importance of dissemination among the scientific community and, regularly, has attended conferences and published in journals: more than 60 articles in JCR-indexed journals, more than 100 papers in International Conferences. He has publications with colleagues from foreign institutions: C. Olaverri (Universität München, Germany), J. Llinas (University of New York at Buffalo, USA), A. Broggi (Università degli Studi di Parma, Italy), U. Nunes (Universidade de Coimbra, Portugal), E. Izquierdo (Queen Mary University of London, UK) and C. Regazzoni (Università di Genova, Italy), Xingcai Lu, (Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China). He was a Visiting Academic in the Multimedia & Vision Research Group, Queen Mary University London, UK (2014/15).
He has published numerous papers on computer vision applications, first on intelligent vehicles for driver assistance systems and now, on perception modules needed for autonomous vehicles and outdoor robots. Lately, he has extended computer vision applications to unmanned aerial vehicles. His Google Scholar reflects part of the influence of his research: 7784 citations and an H-Index of 46.
He has been working on Spanish National Plan research projects since 1991. He has been a Principal Researcher in projects funded by the National Plan since 2004. In summary, he has worked on 27 competitive projects. He has been PR in 8 for a total funding of nearly 500.000€. This experience has taught him how to lead research teams, establish hypotheses, the ability to choose alternative paths to reach a goal, fulfil deadlines, etc. He has worked on 40 technology transference projects for several companies. He has led 10 of them for more than 500.000€. He has taken part in numerous scientific dissemination activities such as Summer Schools at UC3M, Universidad de Cantabria or Madrid’s Science Week.
In 2001, together with other academics, he founded the research group Intelligent Systems Laboratory, lsi.uc3m.es. He has been the Head of the Group since 2005 and has supervised nineteen doctoral theses.
He is a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Advanced Robotic Systems: Robot Sensors (Intech); Revista Iberoamericana de Automática e Informática Industrial (CEA), Electronics (MDPI), Sensors (MDPI) and Integrated Computer-Aided Engineering (IOS Press). He has taken part in several international conference Committees and is a habitual reviewer of conferences and journals. He organized the special sessions about Computer Vision for Robotics and Automation in the 6th Iberian Conference on Pattern Recognition and Image Analysis 2013, Data Fusion in Intelligent Transport Systems in the 17th International Conference on Information Fusion 2014, the Workshop on Autonomous Vehicles in Off-Road Scenarios for the IEEE Intelligent Vehicles Symposium, 2016 and Autonomous Driving and Driver Assistance Systems in the 4th and 5th Iberian Robotics Conference (2017 and 2019). He was Tutorials/Workshops Chair for the 2018 IEEE International Conference on Vehicular Electronics and Safety. He has led three Special Issues for Robotics and Autonomous Systems (Elsevier) about Autonomous Driving & Driver Assistant Systems (2017, 2019, 2022).
